Expansion joints - an important element of floors

One of the elements of concrete floors that are most often damaged are expansion joints, also known as expansion joints. Since they get damaged so often, are they even needed?

Dilation – why do I need this detail?

Placing expansion joints of concrete floors is undoubtedly necessary to ensure proper operation of the concrete slab. And also the prevention of structural cracks. We make dilatations by cutting concrete to 1/3 or 1/4 of the thickness of the industrial floor. In the depth of the dilatation cut, the floor cracks. That’s how it’s supposed to be. Concrete will break anyway, with the difference that through expansion joints we “crack concrete” where we want, not where “concrete wants”.

To protect the expansion joints from dirt or water that can get into them during floor washing, it is necessary: after the concrete slab dries, the expansion joints are filled with an expansion cord and a permanently elastic mass. It is a special dilatation putty that will work together with the floor. Unfortunately, polyurethane putty is not as durable as a concrete surface. As a result, over time, it wears out, leaves, peels off, partially shrinks. In normal, everyday use, the floor simply wears out.

"Yellow card" - a time of reflection and action

The first cavities appear and this is the most dangerous moment. Each loss in the dilatation weakens it and exposes it to breakage of concrete chunks at its edges, chipping and chipping of the concrete slab. This causes numerous difficulties in working in the warehouse hall. And it also  exposes the user to additional costs and endangers the safety of employees. In warehouse halls, where there is a lot of traffic of vehicles, forklifts, and in particular pallet trucks, such losses damage the wheels of the trucks. Unfortunately, replacing these elements is very expensive. What’s more, not only the tires themselves are harmed, but even the rims or axles of the trolleys. After calculating the expansion joint repair, it often turns out that the procedure is less expensive than the need to repair the equipment moving around the hall.

The conclusions are simple if the expansion joints have been provided on the floor – you should undoubtedly take care of them, and in the case of damage, repair them as soon as possible.
