Repair of expansion joints - contraction and technical joints

REPAIR COSTS proportional to THE AMOUNT OF THE REPAIR

If we leave the expansion joints unrepaired for a long time, their chipping will progress faster and faster. In special cases, this may even result in a serious accident. For example:

“Imagine what could happen in a high-bay hall, where a trolley loads a pallet onto a 10-meter-high rack. A several-millimeter fault on the floor means that hovering over it with a wheel can cause an accident. As a result, this can cause the load on the pallet to fall from a great height or overturn the entire forklift along with the operator;

– a forklift with the forks lowered falls into the defect, tilts forward, rests on the forks and overturns forwards or drops the destructible load.

It is not worth the risk and you need to react quickly to the first signs of dilatation damage. It is high time to repair the expansion joints.

Better sooner – then it will only get worse

In the initial phase, expansion joints are repaired quickly and without major downtime in the plant or hall. If the expansion joints are seriously damaged, there are significant losses in the concrete, the reinforcement is visible, then the repair is more serious, requires more financial outlays and, above all, the exclusion of a given part of the hall from use even for a few days. This is best illustrated by the photo: the floor of the hall with a poorly made expansion joint.

Is it possible then to permanently flood the dilatations and get rid of the problem? We believe that this should not be done. Repair of the expansion joint should consist of its full restoration – re-profiling the edges of the concrete floor or flooding with repair materials and re-cutting and then filling the expansion joint. If the floor has been dilated according to it is because the constructor has designed such a solution and it is the expansion joints, and not, for example, concrete prestressing reinforcement, that should enable the entire concrete slab to work and guarantee its long service life.
